Keep Britain Tidy  - Clean up the Chewing Gum.

Most European towns and cities seem to have got to grips with the removal of chewing gum pollution with well organized cleaning programs.

Yet in most of the UK, gum deposits on our streets, footpaths etc grow daily, unchecked and out of control.

It would seem that very little is being done to remove this pollution, consequently this irritation has grown at an ever-increasing rate into a major social and environmental problem.

Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Bill       “Chewing Gum is Litter”

In section 98 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (definitions), after subsection (5) insert  (5A)

 Litter” includes—

(a) The discarded ends of cigarettes, cigars and like products, and

 (b) Discarded chewing-gum and the discarded remains of other products designed for chewing.”

It is estimated that in the UK there are more than 26 million gum chewers. Chewing their way through more than 3 billion packs of gum per year.
